Team Development with Shell

Team Development was the theme of the day for a group from Shell, who would be tested both physically and mentally through a number of Team Building Activities and unique Team Development Challenges.

The morning session of Team Development kicked off with some brief introductions and objectives for the day, and provided an opportunity for the group to share some experiences with each other. Check in with Lynne for the results, which are, of course, a closely guarded secret - let us just say that there is certain evidence of a boom on one boy and one girl per family some time during the late 90s...!

With the ice well and truly broken, the teams faced their first Team Building challenge of the day, the Helium Stick. The task, which was at first regarded as a 'piece of p@$$' by Team Johan, proved more difficult than any team had imagined, a testing teamwork and leadership to the upmost. One team's skill, however, shone through soaking up the pressure and produced an incredible performance, undoubtedly proving themselves as the most proficient team we have ever come across in our 8 years of facilitating the task. Some say it was all in the coaching...! They are pictured above.

The Team Development continued at a fast pace as the teams were put to the test on their Safety Rule knowledge, followed by another Team Building task that highlighted the teams' ability to plan, organise, design, build and deliver, all whilst sticking to a tight budget, in The Archway Challenge.  Following a shaky start by all (particularly the 'Wandering Individual', who shall, for the sake of this blog, remain nameless), the teams pulled together with outstanding effort. The results of this testing Team Development challenge can be found below, and though there could only be one winning team, it was clear that all teams have learned valuable lessons which could be utilised later on in the session

Archway Challenge Results

Winners - Team Johan - £55,000 profit (£195,000 spent)

Unsuccessful Attempts

Bridge Builders (£195,000 spent), Professionals (£171,000 spent) Endeavour (£135,000 spent), Archy (£110,000 spent)

A lunch break brought an end to the morning session of Team Development, allowing the teams to recover and reflect on the opening Team Building challenges, with the top teams planning in advance their strategies for the afternoon's activities.

The Team Development quickly moved back into full flow, with the afternoon Team Building games focused on competing together as a team whilst getting to know each other along the way - with of course a lot of fun spliced in between. The action was fast paced and energetic, with all teams pushing hard to walk away winners and lift the much coveted Team Challenge Company Winners Trophy. It was a close run thing, which saw all teams in with a chance to claim top spot. The results table has been included below, and as you can see, just a few points seperated the huge effort from all teams taking part.

Team Building Challenges Results

  • Firing Squad with 4800 points
  • A-Team with 4200 points
  • Rocket with 4000 points (and 2 outright wins during the day)
  • LAST PLACE - Chaos with 4000 points (and no wins)

The day of Team Development with Shell had proved a massive success, and it is fair to say that everyone present really took some valuable learning experiences away from the Team Building Activities, and they look forward to instilling these back into the workplace on their return.
