If you’ve decided to enter a creative industry but the tasks you wish to complete needs a team of innovative individuals, how do you go about doing this? How do you gather a team who have a set of skills that are very hard to define or give evidence for? Creativity and innovation are skills that are very hard to define and compare, as people value creativity differently. The important thing is that the creativity of the team reflects the image set by the company as a whole and fit well with the brand identity and core values of the business in question. First of all, when starting a company, do not hire your friends. Unless they have the skills and interests needed then they are no use. Yes, team’s charisma will be high but the development and work will suffer. Go out and find people who share the same goals as you, people who understand the business and are committed to its growth. So where do you find people that are suitable for a creative business? It all depends on what your business is all about; whether it is art, music, design, fashion or advertising, you have to be sure what your outcome is so that you can source the skills that will get your there. Social media is a great way to find people who are good at what they do; their feed can also give you a good idea to whether their beliefs are compatible with your visions for a team. Professional forums such as LinkedIn can be particularly effective in giving you an idea of the experience each individual already has under their belt which could be of use to you. The size of the team depends on the size of the tasks. If the product or service you offering needs a lot of time and effort, more people will be needed with the relevant skills to make the process faster and more efficient. A lower amount of tasks will not need an unnecessary amount of team members as some will be left with little to do so make sure you are realistic about how much work is involved. Once you have recruited the right people then team building companies are good for improving cohesiveness and team bonding. Team development is crucial for new businesses; everybody needs to understand each other’s strengths and weaknesses to foster an environment conducive to creativity and innovation.
