As a team building company, we work with businesses around Scotland (and, indeed, the rest of the UK and Ireland, too!) that are just like yours, struggling to get the work and play balance just right. Knowing what motivates your employees will allow for higher levels of productivity, and happier staff.

It's a known fact that we are all motivated in different ways to do the things that we do, to do the work that we carry out, and the behaviour we exhibit to those around us. In the workplace, this is especially important as this is the place where we spend most of our time, and where we make our way in the world.

While, on paper, most people are motivated by extrinsic factors such as promotions, praise, attention and money, in reality, it's the intrinsic factors of personal satisfaction, engagement and learning new things that keep our motivation levels and morale high in the workplace. In order to build the best team that you can, it is important to consider all of these elements.

Intrinsic Motivations

It is important to employees that they are in roles that suit their personality, strengths and weaknesses, to allow them to grow and develop their careers along with your business. Choosing the right person for the job is essential to your team, department and overall company, but it is also crucial for the individual, as it will allow them to thrive in the right setting. The wrong person in a job will not feel engaged or want to develop within their role.

Help your employees feel engaged with their role and their team by building on their strengths and using this to your advantage. This will also allow you to fill holes better in the overall skillset of your workforce. Allow staff the chance for personal development to bolster their engagement, and overall job satisfaction.

Extrinsic Motivations

Having a set practice of reviewing performance and taking an active interest in the development and work produced by your team is one of the best ways to ensure that staff are rewarded for their hard work, whether this is with a salary review or a promotion opportunity.

While it is important to highlight mistakes and misgivings, you should endeavour to make a point of praising staff for their efforts, too, regardless of the outcome. This genuine praise will be much more constructive in ensuring mistakes are not repeated. This attention and focus will not be unnoticed, and staff members are much more likely to respond positively.

With a motivated team, your business can reach dizzy new heights in no time. Our team building company offer so much more than just activity days and games; we also offer experiential learning and development coaching, along with a free business health check to make sure your business is on the right track for success. Happy staff means happy customers; happy customers means increased reputation, business leads and so much more. So, if you're looking to make your business stand head and shoulders above the rest, you need to work from the inside out.
