The home of the 1986 Commonwealth games was the apt setting for our latest corporate ‘Summer Sports Day’ competition with teams coming from Mott McDonald. Offices the length and breadth of the country battled it out to win the annual trophy for best sports team on the day. They squared up on a wide variety of activities including football, basketball, athletics and of course our very own school races, with a bungee run challenge thrown in for good measure. Yorkshire and London were first up to tackle the races, where Yorkshire took to the sack like a duck to water and jumped off into an early lead. London hit back in the egg and spoon race with a tortoise and hare style approach which suited them well after a self confessed heavy night on the tiles! They blew away the cobwebs on the space hopper race by pipping Yorkshire by a nose to the line. Yorkshire evened it up on the bean bag race however.

The bungee run awaited the two eager warriors as Yorkshires power overcame a resilient London uprising! They staked an early claim for top dogs. Cambridge, fresh from a beating by Oxford on the boat race, looked to overcome the hosts Edinburgh in the next match. A bright start by Edinburgh was overshadowed by Billy's unusual but effective performance in the sack race, hauling Cambridge in front. Wayne was king of the hopper as they looked to restore some pride in the closing stages. Cambridge eventually won a ‘do or die’ battle on the bungee run as they had the beauty of fresh legs as John donned the cycling shorts once again to the adulation if his team mates. Altchrinam and Shifnal were up next as the two teams looked to score some much needed points. Catherine was the driving force behind Altchrinam’s success as she destroyed the opposition with leadership qualities that could be compared to a premier league captain. Sterling work! Shifnal stood no chance as she inspired her team mates especially on the bungee run! Well done!

Birmingham also wiped the floor with Croydon as the ‘A team’ were geniuses with the bean bag and the hopper. A fast pace, high tempo ending to the races as everyone looked forward to the finale of the day. First up, Nabille, who sprinted his way to glory in the kids 100 metre dash, a young Usain bolt in the making! The crescendo of what truly was a fantastic day was the strong man tug of war!!! Each office gave it their all in what was a straight knockout competition. The Newcastle lads, complete with pink vests and flamingo mascot, were really the front runners as they heaved their way into the quarter finals. Arnhem were a tough proposition as well with Dutch courage seeing them through. Edinburgh’s systematic approach won round a dubious crowd as they blasted their way into the final. Birmingham however also looked unstoppable as they destroyed the early favourites, Newcastle. They were just that as the team romped home past a despondent Edinburgh side who did Scotland proud. The sheer weight and power of the brummies were a telling factor. Congratulations to a worthy winner. Edinburgh finished second with Newcastle third. A fantastic day of fun competition with Mott McDonald.

What a great day in a truly special venue. Each team gave it there all to win the day! Birmingham were truly frightening on the tug of war although having a very big height and weight advantage - unlucky Edinburgh. An action packed afternoon with some great highlights
