Bridging the communications gap with Gen Z
Dear Team Leaders,
As more Gen Z enter today’s workplace, I’ve noticed something that might be on your mind as well: how do we connect with a generation seemingly glued to their screens? The answer may be easier than you think!
According to McKinsey & Company, understanding the subtle differences in generational communication is essential for effective leadership. And here’s the twist: despite their digital upbringing, Gen Z actually craves face-to-face interaction more than we might have assumed.

Studies show 72% of Gen Z prefer in-person communication with colleagues at work. Yes, more than 7 out of 10 of these so-called digital natives would rather chat by the water cooler than fire off a Teams or Slack message. But there’s more – an impressive 74% of Gen Zers value face-to-face interactions with their managers. Surprised? You’re not alone! So what does this mean for your team strategy? It’s time to reinvigorate those team building exercises and in-person experiences. But before you plan your next event, remember that the key is to create experiences that resonate across all generations.
Imagine a workplace where Baby Boomers share their wisdom over coffee with curious Gen Zers, where Millennials collaborate in person rather than through endless email threads. This isn’t just a possibility; it’s the future of a more connected and cohesive workplace.
And the shift is already happening. The BBC recently highlighted a growing trend of Gen Zers cutting down on phone usage, with 58% seeking a break from social media. It seems the digital generation is embracing analogue, and the workplace must respond accordingly.
So, it’s time to embrace the paradox. The generation raised on smartphones and social media is longing for genuine face-to-face communication. By recognising and accommodating diverse communication styles, we’re building a stronger, more unified workplace.
Remember, each generation contributes its own unique thread to the workplace. As leaders, it’s up to us to weave them together into a masterpiece!
Hope to speak with you in person soon.
