Highland Games in Dunbar

On Tuesday 8th August, Team Challenge Company had the absolute pleasure of presenting a traditional Scottish Highland games for the lovely Dunbar family in the stunning grounds of Broxmouth Park. The weather was definitely on our side and as the guests arrived in convoy, it was quite clear that the family were extremely competitive, trying to ensure that they beat Mr Dunbar at his own game - Grammy definitely made sure of that!

The festivities kicked off with some classic Scottish games - toss the caber saw the young guns really showing their strength. Grammy was not to be upstaged either with some very impressive performances. This was followed by fly casting, which saw the Highland Warriors come out on top with extremely accurate casting. The same couldn't be said for the Super gramps team, who, while inaccurate, were not to be dissuaded, casting till the final few seconds of the round. Welly throw was heating up and the victors, who nosed ahead in the final few tosses, took the victory by a fine margin.

The teams then came together for a fine showing of strength at the Weight Over Bar. It was a test of strength and speed as the head to head competition kicked off to see who could be the fastest team to toss the hay bales over the bar and race their way back to the famous tree, under which Cromwell stood under during the battle of Dunbar in 1650. Our fastest team, the ‘Brave At Hearts’ were miles ahead of the chasing pack, with a full 20 seconds ahead of the closest team.

After a quick refreshment break, Grandpa was serenaded Happy Birthday by the piper and our esteemed guests. He was most embarrassed! We got straight back into our next rotations, with the archery proving extremely competitive – ‘Brave at Hearts’ snatched the victory by a single arrow, much to their delight. All teams left a lot to be desired at the Chip Shot Golf - Every player made valiant attempts to become the next Rory Mcilroy, but with limited success! The stone lift was too hot to handle for many of our players, with the exception of Paige, who put up an extremely impressive 4 minutes 35 seconds, clearly showing her superhuman strength.

As it came down to our finale which included Laser Clays, it was clear that the ‘Highland Warriors ‘had been practicing, putting up a cool 7000 points, pipping Super Gramps at the post. Over at the haggis hurling, it was clearly Super Gramps time to shine, claiming the most points out of all three teams! As it came to our trophy presentation, our hard working Highland Warriors were unfortunate enough to take home the wooden spoon. Super Gramps just missed out on the top spot by a measly 200 points to the super talented Brave At Hearts, who celebrated with great amounts of cheering and laughter.

It was an absolute pleasure to be part of Mr Dunbar's 75th birthday celebrations and we look forward to welcoming him back to Scotland for his next happy returns!
